Located on the eastern side of the square, this museum makes a refreshing
change from the typically Spanish Revival style. Although the collection
is relatively small in comparison to other art museums, it is often
called San Diego’s ‘jewel box for the arts’.
This appropriately sums up the sheer quality of the works housed
here. The refined collection covers five centuries of American
and European art from the early Renaissance all the way through
to the 19th century. Along with the famous Putnam collection, Timken
Museum of Art boasts works from Dutch and Flemish artists such
as Rembrandt and Rubens. Jean Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-Honore
Fragonard and Jacques Lois David also feature heavily. Works by
American artists such as John Singleton Copley and Albert Bierstadt
are well worth a look. A wonderful taste of Italian and Russian
works are also on display.
Opening hours are from 10am to 4:30pm Tuesday to Saturday and from
1:30pm on Sunday. It is shut on Mondays and during the month of September.
If you are in any way an art lover, then the Timken Museum of Art
is simply a must-see, especially as it is free admission! |
