Santa Fe Depot

Constructed in 1915 for the Panama-California Expo and used by Amtrak today, this beautiful historic railway station is well worth a visit. Bright blue and yellow tiles decorate the tops of the two white towers similar to the California Building in Balboa Park. This wonderful mixture of cheery colour is also splashed around the waiting room. The Depot houses the offices of the San Diego Railroad Museum, which has 90 pieces of stock including freight cars, passenger cars and locomotives, all of which are on show at various locations around the county. The main depot is Campo and from here members can jump aboard restored trains, some descending downhill from a height of 2500 feet. Prices vary, but this is a wonderful way of getting a first-hand insight into the Golden Age of train travel while taking in the spectacular views.
Also located at the Santa Fe Depot is a superb model of the aircraft carrier, the USS Midway. This is due to house the new Aircraft Carrier Museum at Navy Pier.
For a relaxing, fascinating and educating day out, the Santa Fe Depot should be high up on the list of things to do. Bring a picnic, sit back and enjoy!
