When visiting San Diego, it is well worth a trip to this fascinating
museum, which takes you on a wonderful journey through the history
of mankind. It boasts a very impressive collection of pottery,
jewelry, physical remains and artifacts. There are over 70,000
items of interest on display. The transformation of the museum
into a world class act, began in the early 20th century when expeditions
by anthropologists and archeologists to the American Southwest,
Alaska, Guatemala, Siberia, Africa and the Philippines led to a
gathering of around 5000 objects. Many of these were shown at ‘The
Story of Man through the Ages’ exhibition in 1915, which
was to form the core of the museum.
Various themes and stories are told throughout the building. One
of these is the evolution through fossils, stone tools and dioramas.
Another section looks at the similarities between the skeletons of
humans, apes and monkeys. One of the permanent exhibitions includes
a display showing the Kumeyaay way of life, which was the area’s
Native American tribe.
The Children’s Discovery Centre, which aims to help younger
people understand and appreciate different cultures, has been added
more recently and has proved to be very successful.
The museum opens daily from 10am to 4:30pm and admission is very
reasonably priced. This really is a lovely family day out with a
bit of a difference. |
