Built in 1999 in Balboa Park, this former Federal Building boasts
some lovely architecture. The impressive entrance is similar to
the governor’s palace in the ancient city of Uxmal in Mexico.
Before its conversion, it was a one-storey gymnasium with volleyball
and badminton courts. Although not fully completed, the museum
is certainly worth a visit and might just put you through your
paces. The Sportability Challenge on the ground floor boasts various
interactive machines which can test your fitness, reaction times,
speed, strength and flexibility. The Breitbard Hall of Champions
is situated upstairs, and this section is dedicated to honoring
San Diego’s heroes of sport. Plaques of figures such as the
baseball player Ted Williams, the football player Marcus Allen,
the tennis player Maureen Connolly and the boater Dennis Conner
decorate the walls. The basement is dedicated to memorabilia. Here
you can find beautiful glass cabinets housing treasured items such
as, trophies, uniforms, baseball bats and balls, swimsuits and
many other articles proudly on show. The museum is open daily from
10am to 4:30pm and admission is reasonable and well worth it, even
if it’s just to test your physical ability. |
