Located to the rear of the impressive Horton Plaza Park, this massive
mall served as the main catalyst for San Diego’s downtown
redevelopment. With five levels, it covers the area of seven blocks
and has 2300 parking spaces. The plaza boasts a multi-screen cinema,
two live theatres, 140 shops, a large variety of restaurants and
shops. This really does cater for all and makes a great family
day out.
Although quite dull and uninviting from the exterior, the inside
is very contemporary while providing a bit of nostalgia with the
1907 Jessop Clock just for good measure. On the northern side of
the mall lie two obelisks, one which is covered with a fabulous mosaic
extending down into the Lyceum Theatre and the other in front of
the Westin Hotel. These impressive works are well worth a look just
on their own. The best view for people watching is on the top floor
where there is a lovely, but not too cheap eatery.
If it’s a day out shopping, a trip to the theatre or cinema
or simply to catch a glimpse of downtown San Diego’s everyday
hustle and bustle and way of life, then the Horton Plaza is the place
to be. |
