Built in 1950 and 1969 respectively, Shelter and Harbor Islands are
in fact peninsulas joined to the mainland by causeways. They were
formed by using the soil dredged from the bottom of the harbor.
These T-shaped landmarks now act as moorings for a larger amount
of pleasure boats and boast top quality hotels, restaurants, bars,
boatyards and car parks. The panoramic views of San Diego from
here are breathtaking. The pointed structure towards Shelter Island,
is the highly acclaimed clubhouse of the San Diego Yacht Club.
This held the America’s Cup yachting trophy from 1987 to
1995. Friendship Bell, a gift from Yokohama, San Diego’s
Japanese twin city, can be found at the western end of Shelter
Island. Towards the centre of the island lies the Tunaman’s
Memorial. This celebrates the memory of San Diego’s tuna
fleet, which was once the largest and most impressive on the planet.
It is made of bronze and was designed by a fisherman called Franco
Vianello. Although these are the main points of note, it is well
worth a visit, if only to sample the atmosphere of these ‘island
people’.
