Located in Downtown San Diego, Gaslamp Quarter is a fascinating area,
and well worth a visit. The best way to fully appreciate the history
and architecture is a leisurely walk around during daylight. Over
the last century and a half, the area has gone through various
transitions. Back in 1867, its main street, 5th Avenue, was largely
comprised of gambling joints, saloons, bordellos and opium dens.
By the 1960s, rows of seedy bars and brothels didn’t do much
to attract business and development. However in the early 1980’s
the Gaslamp Quarter Council helped rebuild and thus transform the
area.
!9th-century style gaslamps, rows of trees, brick sidewalks and the
restoration of older buildings which now boast trendy bars, restaraunts,
galleries and theatres, all helped to rejuvenate and revitalize the
floundering district. A large part is now designated a National Historic
District and there is strict control over development.
There is a guided walking tour available from the Gaslamp Quarter
Historical Foundation, located at 410 Island Avenue. This lasts about
an hour is very reasonably priced and ensures you don’t miss
any of the main sites. There are plenty of buzzing café’s
and restaurants to enjoy and they are generally not too expensive. |
