Eating out in San Diego

Eating out in San Diego is a pleasure. There is a very impressive choice of over 6400 restaurants to choose from, so it is probably best to first decide what type of food you are looking for before wandering around. The variety of food available is equally impressive, with anything from Mexican huevos rancheros to a Thai curry to fish and chips on the menu. Dining out needn’t burn a hole in your pocket as there are many cheap and cheerful, but good quality restaurants around. As you would expect there are also many top class eateries in the city, but be prepared to pay big bucks. Dress code tends to bear towards the casual side, although it is advisable to not to underdress. A lot of the busier places like to have several seatings per night, so it’s generally expected that you leave as soon as you’ve finished your meal. Smoking in bars and restaurants is forbidden by law, but quite a few places have outdoor facilities available. Don’t forget the legal age for alcohol consumption is 21, so if you think you may be asked, bring a good form of photograph identification with you. Like other American cities, San Diego operates a tipping system, so make sure to budget for about 20% above the meal price. It is recommended that you ring in advance to reserve your table and also check if children are catered for.
