Aerospace Museum

This exciting highlight attraction is located towards the south of the Balboa Park, and perfectly illustrates the essence of flight. It is both educating and entertaining, and is most certainly worth the entrance fee. Before you even enter the building, the fascinating history begins. Here you fid the famous Blackbird SR-71 which was in commission from 1966 to 1990. Although nearly 40 years old, this beast is still regarded as one of the fastest planes ever built. Its structure consists mostly of titanium, and it could fly at a very impressive 85,000 feet. Inside the museum lies the Spirit of St Louis, the craft which crossed the Atlantic in 1927, with only Charles Lindbergh onboard. Here you can also find Curtiss A-1 Triad, the first US Navy airplane. Amazingly, this little gem could operate on both land and sea.
There are various exhibitions throughout the museum, commemorating the feats of past heroes and legends, including Neil Armstrong, the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart and Chuck Yeager. There are also sections dedicated to WW1 and WW2 which display the aircraft in use at the time, including the British Spitfire. In the courtyard, a Phantom jet pursues a Russian MiG-17 between art deco lamp posts. There is also a special section dedicated to the achievements of airborne women.
This really is a super day out for everyone and the museum opens daily from 10am to 4:30pm. Admission is very reasonable.
